At a Glance
From cross-country in Stanmer Park on 5 December to the Brighton Half on 28 February and Marathon Weekend on 3 and 4 April, the winter and spring running calendar is busy. Dates below are confirmed on organisers' pages as of 19 October 2026; anything unconfirmed is marked TBC. A section on seafront running routes covers everyday runs.
1. Cross-country, November to February
Winter in Sussex belongs to cross-country. The Sussex Cross Country League runs four races between October and February. Three of the fixtures fall inside our window:
- Saturday 7 November 2026: Ardingly Showground.
- Saturday 5 December 2026: Stanmer Park, Brighton (BN1 9QA), the one fixture inside the city.
- Saturday 13 February 2027: Glyndebourne, Lewes (BN8 5UU).
Clubs enter teams in the league, so you normally take part by joining a club first (see our clubs guide). The East Sussex Sunday Cross Country League is a more relaxed option: its page describes 12 teams from 15 clubs, six races of about five miles, roughly monthly from October to March, with all abilities welcome. We could not find confirmed dates for the Sunday league, so check the league page.
2. Brighton Half Marathon: Sunday 28 February 2027
The Brighton Half Marathon (billed as the "UK's Happiest Half") returns on Sunday 28 February 2027, with Youth Races on Saturday 27 February for ages 7 to 17. Entry details, the route and the start location are on the official site, so check them there. RunBrighton is a training partner of the event and runs its pace team.
3. Brighton Marathon Weekend: 3 and 4 April 2027
The Brighton Marathon Weekend takes up the first weekend of April, with up to 20,000 participants across three events:
- Brighton Miles, Saturday 3 April: a fast, flat road mile starting at Preston Park.
- Brighton & Hove 10K, Sunday 4 April: a road 10K starting at Hove Lawns, listed with 57 feet of elevation.
- Brighton Marathon, Sunday 4 April: starts at Preston Park. General entry has sold out, though the organiser says charity places remain.
If you want to cheer rather than run, this is the biggest weekend on the city's running calendar. Check the organiser's pages for road closures and spectator advice.
4. Local 10Ks: dates to be confirmed
Two club 10Ks use the promenade. Neither has a 2027 date on its page that we could confirm, so we mark both as dates TBC, check the organiser.
- The Hove Prom 10K, organised by Arena 80, is described as a flat, double out-and-back on Hove Promenade.
- The Brighton Phoenix 10K is an out-and-back on the promenade from Hove Lawns towards Shoreham. The most recent edition shown on the club's page was a Wednesday evening in July 2026.
For other Sussex road races, the county's Sussex Races page is the best place to look. We found no other confirmed races between April and June 2027 on pages we could check, and we would rather leave that gap than guess.
5. Seafront running routes in Brighton and Hove
For most people the question is not which race to enter but where to run on a normal Tuesday. The seafront is the answer, and the organisers' pages above describe several of its most-used stretches:
- Hove Promenade, from Hove Lawns westwards. The Hove Promenade parkrun course is a 5k entirely on tarmac, and the two club 10Ks above are both described as flat out-and-back runs on this stretch. The Phoenix 10K heads towards Shoreham. This is the usual choice for steady, flat running.
- Hove Lawns and the link to Brighton. The Brighton & Hove 10K starts at Hove Lawns, which shows how the front links the two towns.
- Eastern seafront, Madeira Drive area. Brighton Tri Club's free Wednesday trial is a seafront run, and the Swimming Club's changing rooms sit on the Lower Promenade just east of Palace Pier. Our promenade A-Z entry and seafront entry give local context.
Practical tips: the promenade is shared with walkers, cyclists and, in summer, a lot of people with ice cream, so run early or late on warm days. Wind off the sea changes the feel of an out-and-back, so many runners start into the wind. If you want company, a parkrun on this front or the Wednesday seafront run with Brighton Tri Club are good first routes. We have not measured these stretches ourselves, and we do not claim exact distances beyond what the organisers state.
6. Planning your season
A sensible route for someone new to the city is to join a club in the autumn, try one or two Saturday cross-country fixtures over the winter, and use the Brighton Half on 28 February as the spring target. If your sights are set on a bigger distance, the marathon's general entry has sold out, so charity places are the realistic route for April 2027. Allow time for training: a first half marathon normally needs a few months of regular running, and winter conditions on the seafront can be windy and wet, so a well-lit route and a club group help.
Always read the organiser's page for entry deadlines, age limits and cut-off times. The details above are summaries, not entry terms.
7. Summer 2027 and beyond
Our window ends in June, but a few later dates are worth a note.
- Supertri Brighton takes place on Sunday 29 August 2027 (August bank holiday weekend) at Hove Lawns and along the Promenade. It was formerly the Brighton & Hove Triathlon, and the organiser lists Supersprint, Sprint and Olympic distances. Our Supertri Brighton page has local detail.
- The Brighton Phoenix 10K and Swim Brighton (organised by Brighton Tri Club) took place in summer 2026. Their 2027 dates are TBC.
Swimmers should see our sea swimming guide.
