Brighton has a sea swimming club dating back to 1860, a heated outdoor pool at Sea Lanes, and the Grade II* Saltdean Lido. Local beaches were rated Excellent or Good in the 2025 bathing water classifications, but lifeguards only cover the summer season. Details below come from official and operator pages checked on 19 October 2026.
1. Sea, pool or lido?
Brighton gives you three quite different ways to swim outdoors, and newcomers often mix them up. Sea Lanes is a heated pool beside the sea, not the sea itself. Saltdean Lido is a heated outdoor pool. The English Channel is the third option, free to anyone but cold, tidal and without lifeguards outside the summer season. This guide covers all three, starting with the club that has swum in the sea for generations.
2. Sea swimming clubs and events
The City of Brighton & Hove Swimming Club describes its sea swimming section as "swimming in the sea since 1860". Members swim every day of the year from the club's changing rooms, known as The Arch, on the Lower Promenade off Madeira Drive, just east of Palace Pier. The Arch membership year starts on 1 April, and a waiting list applies if the club is at capacity. The club also runs an annual open Pier to Pier Race. Contact details are on the club page.
Brighton Tri Club organised Swim Brighton in 2026, in collaboration with Sea Lane, and its Swim Brighton page is the place to check for the next edition. We could not confirm a 2027 date, so treat it as TBC. For open-water sessions with triathlon clubs, see our clubs guide.
3. Sea Lanes Brighton
Sea Lanes sits at 300 Madeira Drive (BN2 1BX). Its 50-metre, six-lane outdoor pool is heated to 19°C all year, and operator South Downs Leisure calls it a "stepping stone to the sea". Opening hours when we checked were Monday and Tuesday 6:00 to 21:30, Wednesday to Friday 6:00 to 21:00, Saturday 6:30 to 19:00 and Sunday 6:30 to 20:00, but hours change, so check the operator's page. Membership includes Wadurs Pool and the Southwick gym. The Visit Brighton listing gives visitor information.
4. Saltdean Lido
Saltdean Lido (BN2 8SP) is a Grade II* listed pool that opened in 1938. The outdoor pool is heated to roughly 25°C in summer and 19°C in winter, according to the lido's website. The main summer season runs from May to September, and the website also described a short winter season from 1 December to 5 January, with weekend morning hours. The 2027 dates are TBC. Parking is free and buses 27, 12X, 12 and 14 serve the area. At the end of the season the lido holds a "Dogtember" dog swim.
5. Getting started
A sensible first season looks like this. Begin at Sea Lanes or Saltdean Lido to build confidence and stamina in a controlled pool. Move to the sea in summer, on a lifeguarded beach and during lifeguard hours, with a friend. If you want to continue into autumn and winter, talk to the Swimming Club about The Arch or join a group, because lifeguards are not on duty then and cold water changes quickly. Keep a warm layer, a hot drink and dry clothes ready for afterwards. Getting changed quickly matters more than most newcomers expect, which is partly why a base such as The Arch is valued by regulars. Finally, shingle beaches make getting in and out harder than sand does, so wear sturdy water shoes if you are unsure of your footing.
6. Water quality on Brighton beaches
The Environment Agency tests bathing water at designated beaches from May to September. Its Swimfo bathing water service publishes sample results, annual ratings (excellent, good, sufficient or poor, based on up to four years of data) and daily pollution risk forecasts at a number of sites. The ratings in the government's 2025 classifications (updated 25 November 2025) were:
- Saltdean: Excellent
- Rottingdean Beach: Excellent
- Brighton Kemptown: Excellent
- Brighton Central: Good
- Hove: Excellent
A classification is a multi-year rating, not a guarantee for today. Check the daily forecast on Swimfo before you swim, especially after heavy rain.
7. Lifeguard season
According to a Brighton & Hove City Council announcement of 22 May 2026, RNLI lifeguards covered the main season from 23 May to 6 September 2026, between 10am and 6pm, seven days a week. Beaches included Dukes Mound, Palace Pier East and West, West Street, West Pier and Bandstand, and Hove Lawns. Saltdean, Rottingdean and West Hove/Lagoon were covered from 18 July to 6 September. The King Alfred beach was not a lifeguarded beach. The 2027 dates are TBC, and outside these dates and hours nobody is watching the water. The council also warns about steep shingle and difficult entry and exit at high water and in strong winds. See the council's seafront pages for current information.
8. Cold water safety
The council and RNLI advice in that same announcement is a good checklist for anyone new to the sea:
- Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.
- Speak to the lifeguards about tides and weather on the day.
- Check the weather forecast, tide times and local hazard signs.
- For open water swimming, wear a wetsuit to keep warm, a bright-coloured swim hat, and take a tow float to hold a phone and other belongings.
- Tell someone what you are doing, where you are going and when you expect to return.
Autumn and winter swimmers have no lifeguards at all, which is one reason many people swim with a club or a group rather than alone. Build up gradually as the water cools, and do not swim alone while you are still learning how your body reacts.
